Live penances
Doing a penance live: on a private call with your keyholder, or live on CageCheck with followers or all members watching. Who decides, and how it's accepted.
Most penances are done by sending proof. A penance can also be done live, while someone watches.
The three ways
- Send proof: the member does it and sends a photo or video (see Do a penance).
- On a call: the member does it on a private video call while their keyholder watches. Either of them can start the call from the penance. Both need a verified ID.
- Live on CageCheck (new in v0.15.1): the member goes live and does it while their followers, or all members, watch. Their keyholder can watch too. It's for members only: live penances never have public links. The member needs a verified ID.
Who decides
The keyholder can require it. When assigning a penance, they choose On a call or Live on CageCheck under How they do it. For a live on CageCheck they also pick Who watches: Their followers or All members. They can also switch on Record it (see Recording a live penance). Then they tap Assign live penance.
Unless it's against the member's limits. On the Keyholder tab, under Live penances: not okay, a locked member can rule out penances on a video call, live on CageCheck, in front of all members (followers are okay), or being recorded. Options they've ruled out are greyed out for their keyholder, marked "one of their hard limits". See Hard limits.
Otherwise it's the member's choice. For a penance that asks for proof, the member can still choose to do it live. On the penance page, the Do it live instead? (optional) card has Call Morgan and 🔴 Go live on CageCheck. The keyholder can't start a penance call for it: doing it live is up to the member.
Doing it on a call
- Open the penance and tap Call Morgan to start (or Call Morgan if it's your choice). When a call is required, your keyholder can also call you from the penance; tap Answer when it rings.
- On the call, the ⚖️ Live penance panel shows what to do. Tap it to fold it away, and again to open it.
- When you're done, either of you can tap End call.
If you want to stop, tap 🛑 Use my safeword at the bottom of the panel. See Your safeword.
See Voice and video calls for the call controls.
Going live for a penance
- Open the penance and tap 🔴 Go live (or 🔴 Go live on CageCheck if it's your choice).
- Give it a Title, or keep "Live penance".
- Under Who watches, choose Your followers or All members. If your keyholder required it, their choice is shown instead.
- Switch on Show what the penance is only if you want viewers to read it. It's off by default.
- Tap 🔴 Go live.
It's announced to your followers (and listed for all members if you chose All members), and your keyholder is notified ("Riley is doing their penance live"). The feed shows "is doing a live penance set by Morgan" with a Watch button, never what the penance is. Chat is on, and you can bring people on camera, remove anyone, and end it any time. Your ⚖️ Live penance panel shows what to do, and your safeword is at the bottom of it.
For a followers-only live, only people who followed you before you went live can watch, plus your keyholder. The link alone doesn't let anyone else in, and Share says so.
What viewers see
Viewers see "⚖️ Live penance · set by @morgan" over the video. If you switched on Show what the penance is, they can tap it to read the penance. They never see your code or your recording controls.
Being watched by your keyholder
Your keyholder can open the live from the notification or from 🔴 Watch them live on the penance. On a call or in your live, they see the whole penance, whether you're recording ("REC"), and a button to accept it.
Accepting it as done live (keyholders)
Once you've seen it done, tap ✓ Accept penance (done live), then Yes, accept it, during the call or live. Or later, open the penance and tap ✓ Accept: done live (you can add a note). The member is told, and the penance shows ✓ Accepted (done live).
For a penance that asked for proof, the accept button appears once the member has done it live: a call they joined, or a live they hosted. If they sent a recording, you can review it and tap Accept or Ask for a redo instead.
