Recording a live penance

How recording works during a live penance: only your camera and microphone, you start and stop it, and nothing is sent until you choose.

During a live penance (on a call or live on CageCheck), the locked member can record themselves doing it and send the video to their keyholder as proof.

What's recorded, and who's in control

  • Only your own camera and microphone. On a call, never your keyholder's camera or voice. In a live, not anyone you bring on camera, and not the chat.
  • You start it and you stop it. Your keyholder can't start, stop or see a recording until you send it.
  • Nothing is sent until you choose. Only ■ Stop & send sends it.

Your keyholder can ask for a recording by switching on Record it when they assign a live penance, unless being recorded is one of your hard limits. You can also record any live penance yourself as your proof.

Start recording

  1. Join the call or go live for your penance (see Live penances).
  2. Turn your camera on. On a call, wait until your keyholder has joined.
  3. In the ⚖️ Live penance panel, tap ⏺ Start recording.
  4. Read the summary and tap Start recording (or Not yet).
Recording in progress in the Live penance panel

While it records, the panel shows "REC" and the time, out of a maximum of 45 minutes. Your keyholder sees that you're recording.

Stop the recording

  • ■ Stop & send stops it and sends it to your keyholder. Keep CageCheck open while "Sending your recording" shows; it goes quickly because most of it uploaded as you went.
  • Stop & delete, then Delete it, throws it away. Nothing is sent.

After you send it, CageCheck gets the video ready (the penance shows "Getting your recording ready…"). Then your keyholder is notified, you're told it was sent, and the penance waits for them to review it.

Recordings waiting for you

If a recording stops any other way (you turn your camera or microphone off, the call or live ends, you leave, the connection drops, the page reloads, or it reaches 45 minutes), nothing is sent. It's held for you.

You're notified, and the penance page shows ⏸ A recording is waiting for you. Tap Send it to Morgan or Delete it. If you don't decide within 48 hours, it's deleted automatically.

Limits

  • Up to 45 minutes per recording.
  • About 600 MB per recording.
  • Up to 12 recordings per penance.

If a recording couldn't be saved, you're told that nothing was sent, and you can record it again.

Your keyholder reviews it

Your keyholder is notified when the recording is ready ("Riley's live penance recording is ready"). They open the penance, watch it, and tap Accept or Ask for a redo. They can also accept the penance as done live without one.

Deleting a recording

You can delete any recording of yourself at any time:

  1. Open the penance.
  2. Under the recording, tap Delete this recording.
  3. Tap Delete recording.

It's deleted for good, for both of you, and your keyholder is told. If it was posted to the feed, the post comes down too. If your keyholder hadn't reviewed it yet, the penance waits for a new recording.

Only you, your keyholder and CageCheck moderators can see a recording. It's kept for as long as your other proof, unless you post it (see Penance videos in the feed).
