Hard limits
How a locked member sets their hard limits (a checklist and their own words) and live penance limits, what changes when they update them, and what a keyholder can't require.
Hard limits are the things a locked member won't do. They belong to the locked member: only they can set or change them, and they can change them at any time. Their keyholder sees them and can't override them. They're never a power: no lock, preset or contract can hold them.
There are three parts, all on the Keyholder tab:
- Your hard limits: a checklist CageCheck enforces, and a written list in your own words.
- Live penances: not okay: switches for the kinds of live penance your keyholder can't require.
Set your hard limits (locked members)
- Open the Keyholder tab.
- In Your hard limits, tick what's never okay for you: Anything in public or outdoors, Anything other people can see, beyond my keyholder, Spending money or sending gifts, Contacting other people, Showing my face, Pain or impact, Hard physical exercise, Clothing or items to wear, Eating or drinking something specific, Anything at work or school, Anything overnight.
- Below the checklist, write anything else you won't do, whatever the task. One per line works well (up to 2,000 characters).
- Tap Save.
A task or penance that involves something you've ticked can't be set: CageCheck refuses it. Your written list is in your own words, so CageCheck can't check it, but your keyholder sees it every time.
Under the box you'll see that your keyholder sees these every time they set a task or penance, and when you last updated them.
Live penance limits
A keyholder can ask for a penance to be done live: on a video call with them, or live on CageCheck with others watching, and sometimes recorded. Switch on anything that isn't okay for you:
- On a video call with my keyholder
- Live on CageCheck, with others watching
- With all members watching (my followers are okay): shown only while the one above is off. Your keyholder can still ask for a live in front of your followers.
- Recorded
You choose these when you send or accept a pairing request, and you can change them any time under Live penances: not okay on the Keyholder tab. Tap Save after changing them.
These limits only stop your keyholder requiring something. You can still choose to do a penance live yourself. See Live penances.
What happens to open penances
When you save a new live limit, any open penance that goes against it is changed to fit straight away:
- A penance required on a call, or live on CageCheck, becomes one you do by sending photo or video proof instead.
- A live in front of all members becomes followers only. If that live is happening now, it switches to followers only at once.
- A required recording is dropped.
You'll see how many penances were changed, and your keyholder is told exactly what changed.
What your keyholder sees
Whenever you change your hard limits or your live limits, your keyholder gets an alert, "Riley updated their hard limits", with what you added to or removed from the checklist, your new list, and any penances that changed.
Your keyholder sees your hard limits:
- on your page, in the Tasks card under Hard limits, with your live limits in a line like "Live penances · Not okay: recorded"
- every time they set a new task or assign a penance, under Their hard limits at the top of the sheet
- when they approve a check-in exception with a penance
- on the pairing request (on their Home and Pairing page), for your live penance limits
Keyholders: you can't require what they rule out
- When you set a task or assign a penance, tick what it involves under What it involves. Their hard limits are marked their hard limit, and ticking one says it can't be set. The task or penance shows what it involves to both of you.
- The same goes for a task's penance if they miss it (What the penance involves) and a penance with a check-in exception. If they tick a hard limit later, a missed task's penance that involves it isn't issued, and a repeating task that involves it stops repeating. You're told either way.
- CageCheck won't let you require a live penance that goes against their live limits. In Assign a penance, those options are switched off and marked as one of their hard limits. Their written list and live limits are shown at the top of the sheet.
- The written list is in their own words, so CageCheck can't check it for you. Read it every time you set a task or penance, and never ask for anything on it. If they haven't written any, ask them before you set something new.
- They can decline any task or penance with their safeword, with no penalty, and say it crosses one of their hard limits. You're told.
Writing a contract? Your hard limits are filled in for you. Changing them in a contract doesn't change the ones on your pairing: tasks and penances always follow those.
