Lockboxes for keyholders

What you see when someone you hold uses a Beta lockbox, how to check a photo of their dials, and what your releases do to the box.

Members can choose how they're locked when they start a lock (see How your lock is locked). If someone you hold uses a Beta lockbox, their page shows a card for it under their timer, marked Beta: how they're locked, their fail-safe, and when the lock ends on its own at the latest (their maximum lock time).

You're told how they're locked when they start, for example "Check-ins at least once a day. Combination lockbox (Beta)."

You never see their code

CageCheck keeps a combination lockbox's code from both of you. You can't see a code CageCheck made, ever. When you release them, CageCheck shows it to them.

Check a photo of their dials

If they chose Photo of my dials, they scramble the dials without looking and send a photo. You're asked to check the numbers can be read:

  1. Open their page and find the lockbox card.
  2. Tap 👁 Check the dial photo.
  3. Tap Readable if you can read every number. If you can't, tap Not readable, then Ask for a new photo to confirm.
Checking Riley's dial photo

Every look is logged, and they can see the log (Code log). If you ask for a new photo, they'll need to open the box to scramble it again, with their fail-safe or with you there. Until they send one, the old photo is still their way out.

When you release them

The release sheet says what will happen:

  • Combination lockbox: CageCheck reveals their code to them. After a release for a while, they set a new code before they can lock back up.
  • Smart lockbox: CageCheck tells their box to unlock, or gives them a one-time code for it.
  • Timer box: CageCheck can't open it. They need its own timer to run out, or their fail-safe.

Emergency unlock, their maximum lock time and a lock ending on its own give them their way out too.

Smart lockboxes

The card shows their box, its battery, and what it reports. If an R+D box reports it's unlocked during a lock with no release, you get "Riley’s box reports it’s unlocked". It may be their emergency unlock or fail-safe: check in with them. A box's report is never proof on its own.

If their box can't be reached when they're released, you're both told, and they're pointed to their fail-safe.

If you're away

If you haven't been on CageCheck for a week, they can release themselves (see If your keyholder is away). You're told if they do.
