Pause tasks and penances
Put tasks and penances on hold for illness, travel or a break, and what happens to deadlines when you resume.
Life happens. Either of you can pause tasks and penances on a pairing, for illness, travel or a break.
What a pause does
While tasks and penances are paused:
- No deadline passes. Open tasks and penances show Paused instead of a due time, they don't go overdue, tasks aren't marked missed, and no penance is issued for a missed task.
- Repeating tasks wait.
- Reminders stop.
- Nothing new can be set: the keyholder's + New task and + Assign buttons are switched off, and Reject & assign a penance and Approve with a penance aren't offered. Photo reviews and check-in exceptions still work as usual, just without a penance.
When you resume:
- One-off tasks and penances are due 24 hours later. One that had more than 24 hours left when you paused keeps that time instead, so a pause never shortens a deadline. A penance that had 6 hours left has 24 hours; one that had 3 days left still has 3 days.
- Repeating tasks pick up again the next day at their usual time. A daily task due at 9 PM, resumed at noon, is next due tomorrow at 9 PM, and one on chosen days is next due on the next of those days after today. One that's already due later than that keeps its date.
- If the locked member allows only longer deadlines (their powers), they get those.
Pause
Locked members: open the Keyholder tab. Keyholders: open the page for the person you hold (tap their card on Home).
- Find Pause tasks and penances and tap Pause.
- Add a reason if you like (up to 300 characters), for example "Travelling this week".
- Tap Pause.
The other person is told, with your reason. The card changes to Tasks and penances are paused and shows who paused them, when, why, and who can resume. The locked member also sees this on their Home, and open tasks and penances show Paused.
Resume
Tap Resume on the same card. The other person is told, and the deadlines change as described in What a pause does.
Who can resume:
- A pause the locked member started can only be resumed by them. Their keyholder's Resume button is switched off, and the card says "Only Riley can resume it."
- A pause the keyholder started can be resumed by either of you. The card says so, for example "Riley can resume it too."
So a locked member who needs a break is always in control of it. Pausing works even while your account is on hold (confirming your email, new terms or an ID check), but resuming waits until the hold is lifted.
After an emergency unlock
When a locked member uses emergency unlock, their tasks and penances pause by themselves for 72 hours. The card says Emergency unlock as the reason and shows when they resume, for example "Deadlines are on hold until Thursday, 10:10 PM, when they resume by themselves." The locked member can resume sooner (only they can), and after 72 hours they resume on their own and you're both told. If the keyholder had already paused them, the emergency pause takes over, so only the locked member can resume it. If the locked member had paused them with no end, their pause carries on as it was.
