Combination lockboxes
Let CageCheck keep your lockbox code (one it makes, or a photo of the scrambled dials) until you're released, with an optional time capsule. Beta.
With a combination lockbox, your key goes in the box and CageCheck keeps the code secret until you're released. It's stored encrypted, and nothing in the app shows it before then: not to you, not to your keyholder, not to moderators. (If you send a photo of your dials, your keyholder can look at it to check it's readable, and every look is logged.) This is Beta, so it always comes with a fail-safe and a maximum lock time (see How your lock is locked).
Start a lock with a combination lockbox
- On Home, under How itβs locked, choose π’ Combination lockbox.
- Under How CageCheck keeps your code, choose:
- CageCheck makes it: you see a code once, set your box to it, then scramble the dials. Choose the Digits on your box (3 to 8).
- Photo of my dials: you scramble the dials without looking, then take a photo of them. Best when you have a keyholder to check the numbers are readable.
- Leave Make a time capsule ticked if you want one (see below).
- Choose your Maximum lock time and Your fail-safe, tick the box to confirm, and tap π Start lock.
A code CageCheck makes
Straight after you start, Your lockbox code opens:
- Set your lockbox to this code now.
- Put your key in, close the box and scramble the dials.
- Tap Iβve set my box and scrambled it.
You won't see the code again until you're released, use emergency unlock, or reach your maximum lock time. Don't screenshot it. If you lose it before setting your box, Emergency unlock shows it again (and ends the lock).
A photo of your dials
After you start, your lock page says CageCheck doesnβt have your code yet:
- Scramble the dials without looking.
- Tap π· Photo of scrambled dials and point the camera at the dials, with all the numbers in frame. The preview is blurred on purpose, so you can't read them.
- Take the photo and tap Send to CageCheck.
The photo is kept encrypted, and you can't look at it until you're released. Your keyholder is asked to check the numbers are readable. If they can't read it, you're asked for a new photo: open the box with your fail-safe (or with your keyholder there), scramble again and send another. Until you do, the old photo stays your way out, so it's still shown to you if your lock ends. Changed your mind? π’ Use a code CageCheck makes works instead.
On your lock page
The card under your timer says CageCheck has your code, whether it's a code it made or a photo of your dials, and whether your keyholder has checked it's readable. Code log lists every time your keyholder looked at the photo, checked it, or the code was revealed.
The time capsule
The time capsule is a small file that opens to your code at your maximum lock time, even if CageCheck is down. Download it from the code sheet (β¬ Download your time capsule) or from your lock page (β¬ Time capsule) and keep it somewhere you can reach.
- Nobody can open it before that time, including CageCheck.
- After that time, open it at timevault.drand.love (choose Decrypt and paste the text), or with the free
tletool. The file has the steps. - It relies on the drand network (the League of Entropy) still running when it opens.
When you're released
Whenever you're released or your lock ends, your code is shown to you straight away, with why it was revealed. You get "Your lockbox code is ready" when someone else released you.
Released for a while? Your lock page shows your code under Your way out. It stays there until you lock back up, even after you've set a new one. Before you lock back up, you need a new code (the old one has been seen): open your box with the old code, then tap π’ Use a code CageCheck makes and set your box to it, or send a new π· Photo of scrambled dials. The π Lock back up page asks for it too, and won't lock you back up until CageCheck has it. If you use a time capsule, download the new one: the old file opens to the old code.
Lock ended? The code opens straight away. It stays on Home for 3 days (Your last lockbox code β Show), and in your History (Show my code) after that.
