Check-in exceptions
Ask your keyholder to skip an upcoming check-in, or to excuse a missed or late one, and what happens when they answer.
Life happens. If you can't make a check-in, or you missed one for a good reason, you can ask your keyholder to let it go. Check-in exceptions need a keyholder: if you're self-managing, there's nobody to ask.
The three kinds of request
- Skip a check-in: one that isn't due yet, when you already know you can't make it.
- Excuse a missed check-in: one that's overdue and not done yet.
- Excuse a late check-in: one you did, but late. You can ask for up to 3 days after you checked in.
Ask
- On Home, tap ๐ Ask to skip under the Check in now button. When your check-in is overdue, it says ๐ Ask to excuse instead. For a late check-in, tap Ask to excuse it on the "Your check-in โฆ was late" banner.
- Under Why?, say what's going on (at least a few words).
- Tap Send request.
Morgan gets a notification right away. Family members Morgan lets decide check-in exceptions (Sam, for example) can answer too.
While you wait, the request shows on your lock page as Waiting. You can Cancel it. You can have one request waiting at a time, and once a request about a check-in has been answered, you can't ask about that check-in again.
When they approve
- Skip or missed check-in: your next check-in is due one interval after the one you were excused from. If that miss was already counted, it's taken off your record.
- Late check-in: it no longer counts as late (it shows Late ยท excused), and any miss it caused is taken off.
They can add a note, and they can approve it with a penance (not while tasks and penances are paused, or when you already have 10 open penances from them). A penance that involves one of your hard limits can't be given. If they do, the notification takes you straight to it (see Do a penance). You can always decline a penance with your safeword. There's never a penalty for using it.
When they decline
The check-in stands. For a skip, you still need to check in on time. Their note, if they wrote one, shows on the request.
Where to see the answer
The answer shows on your lock page for a day (Approved or Declined, who answered, their note and any penance). Tap the notification to open the request on its own page.
A waiting request closes if your lock or pairing ends. A waiting request to skip a check-in or excuse a missed one also closes if Morgan gives you a timed release, since nothing is due while you're released. It then says "Not needed: you were released for a while."
An approved exception also restarts the countdown before a lock ends on its own (see When a lock ends on its own).
