Photo check-ins

Turn photo check-ins on, how your keyholder's setting works with yours, how photo reviews work, and how long photos are kept.

A photo check-in adds a picture that shows you're still locked. CageCheck stamps a one-time check-in code, a serial number, your @username and the time (in UTC) on a band under the photo, so an old photo can't be passed off as new.

Turn photo check-ins on

  1. On Home, find the Photo check-ins card and tap Turn on (or Change).
  2. Choose Off, Every check-in or Random.
  3. For Random, choose how often: About 1 in 4, About 1 in 3, About half or Most (3 in 4).
  4. Tap Save.

With Random, CageCheck decides for each check-in whether a photo is needed. When it is, the check-in page shows Required. Reloading doesn't change it.

Your keyholder's setting and yours

Your keyholder can require photos too. The stricter setting always applies: Every check-in beats Random, and a higher chance beats a lower one. You can add photos, but you can't go below what your keyholder asks for. The card tells you where it comes from: Required by Morgan, Set by you and Morgan or Set by you.

Morgan is told when you change your setting, and you get a Photo check-ins updated notification when they change theirs. Locking back up after a timed release always needs a photo, whatever the setting.

Taking the photo

Use 📷 Take photo on the check-in page, or 🎥 Record video to send a short video instead (see Video check-ins). If the camera won't work, choose a photo from your library instead. It still gets stamped, but your keyholder sees it wasn't taken in the app. Location data is removed from every photo. Your keyholder is also warned if a photo looks just like one you've sent before or seems to have been taken days ago.

Photo reviews

With a keyholder, each photo waits for review: 📷 Awaiting review, then 📷 Approved or 📷 Rejected. Morgan reviews it, or a family member Morgan lets review your photos (Sam, for example).

  • Approved: you get a notification, and the check-in stands.
  • Rejected: it counts as a missed check-in. If you haven't checked in since, your check-in clock goes back to the check-in before it, so you need to check in again now with a new photo. Their note shows under the check-in, with the name of whoever reviewed it. They may also give you a penance, and any copies you shared to X or Bluesky are deleted.

Reviewers can undo an approval or rejection within an hour. You're told, and an undone rejection stops counting as a miss.

Without a keyholder, photos are simply saved privately to your history as 📷 Photo logged.

Who can see your photos

You, your keyholder while you're paired, family members your keyholder lets review your photos or see your lock history, and CageCheck's moderators. Photos never appear in the feed unless you post them: one as you check in or later from History, or all of them with Post my check-ins (your keyholder can ask you to). See Check-ins on the feed. You can also choose to share one to X, Bluesky or anywhere else (this needs ID verification, and rejected photos can't be shared). See Share to X, Bluesky and anywhere.

How long photos are kept

  • Player (free): 30 days.
  • Player+ and Pro: you can turn on Keep a year of check-in photos in Settings under Your plan to keep them for 365 days. It's off by default, because keeping fewer photos is safer.

After that the photo is deleted for good and shows "This photo was deleted after the retention period". The check-in itself stays in your history. Penance proof follows the same rule.
