When a lock ends on its own

A lock with no check-in for 5 days in a row ends by itself. Here's how the countdown works, the warnings you get, and what pushes it back.

If you don't check in for 5 days in a row, CageCheck takes it that the lock isn't really running any more and ends it. That keeps your history and your streaks honest. CageCheck's admins can change the number of days (or turn this off), and the app always shows the current number, for example under Minimum check-ins when you start a lock.

When the countdown starts

The 5 days count from the latest of:

  • your last check-in (including locking back up after a release)
  • the check-in your keyholder excused, if they approved a check-in exception
  • the start of a timed release

Any check-in starts the count again. A check-in whose photo is rejected doesn't count: unless you've checked in since, the clock goes back to the check-in before it.

A lock also never ends sooner than a full day after a check-in was due. That matters for longer schedules: on a weekly schedule, you always get at least a day after a missed check-in. After a timed release, the lock can't end until at least a day after the release does.

If your account is on hold

The countdown keeps running while your account is on hold (confirming your email, new terms or an ID check). Ending a lock is also a way out, for example a smart lockbox is told to unlock, so this safety net is never paused. Do what the hold screen asks first, and you can check in again straight away.

Warnings

You're only warned once a check-in is overdue:

  • 2 days to go: "Check in to keep your lock".
  • 1 day to go: "Your lock ends in 24 hours". Your keyholder and family members who acknowledge your check-ins (Sam, for example) are told at this point too.

On a weekly schedule, the 1-day warning can be the first one you get, because the lock can end a day after the missed check-in.

As soon as a check-in is overdue, a red ⏳ line at the top of your lock page shows the countdown, such as "Check in within 2 days or this lock ends on its own". On a computer it's also on the Your lock card. Morgan sees the same countdown on your page.

The countdown banner on Riley's lock page

Example

Riley checks in daily and last checked in on Monday at 9 AM.

  1. Tuesday 9 AM: the check-in is due. Riley gets Missed check-in, and Morgan hears about it.
  2. Thursday around 9 AM: "Check in to keep your lock" (2 days to go).
  3. Friday around 9 AM: "Your lock ends in 24 hours". Morgan and Sam are told.
  4. Saturday around 9 AM: the lock ends.

One check-in at any point before then keeps the lock going.

When it ends

  • You get "Your lock has ended", and Morgan and Sam hear that it ended after 5 days without a check-in.
  • Your history shows the lock as No check-ins, with the note "No check-in for 5 days".
  • The feed can show that you "stopped checking in, so their lock ended after" however many days it lasted, depending on Settings → Activity in the feed.
  • A running lock game stops, and a waiting request closes.
  • With a Beta lockbox, your way out opens: your lockbox code is shown, or your smart box is told to unlock (see How your lock is locked).

You can start a new lock any time from Home.
