End a lock
How a lock ends, whether you're self-managing or held by a keyholder, and what gets recorded.
How you end a lock depends on whether someone holds your key. Whichever way it ends, emergency unlock is always there for you.
If you're self-managing (no keyholder)
- On Home, scroll down and tap End lock.
- Add a note for your history if you like.
- Tap End lock again to confirm, or Keep going to stay locked.
Your timer stops and the lock is saved to your history as Self-ended.
If you have a keyholder
Your keyholder decides when your lock ends, so the End lock button isn't there. Instead:
- On Home, tap Ask keyholder for release.
- Choose End my lock, add a message if you like, and tap Send request.
Morgan gets a notification and can release you For good, give you a timed release instead, or say Not now (your lock carries on, and you can ask again an hour after your last request). When Morgan releases you for good, you get "Morgan released you" with their message (or how long your lock lasted), and the lock is saved as Released by keyholder. Morgan can also end your lock without being asked.
Emergency unlock: always available
If you need out now, for any urgent reason, tap Emergency unlock at the bottom of your lock page, then Unlock now. It ends your lock straight away without asking anyone, never costs anything, and lets Morgan know. See Emergency unlock.
Other ways a lock ends
- No check-ins: a lock with no check-in for 5 days ends on its own. See When a lock ends on its own.
- Maximum lock time: a Beta lockbox lock ends on its own at the maximum lock time you set. See How your lock is locked.
- Your keyholder is away: if they haven't been on CageCheck for a week, you can release yourself. See If your keyholder is away.
- The pairing ends: you or your keyholder can end a pairing at any time from the Keyholder tab (see Pair with a keyholder). Your lock doesn't end, but it becomes self-managed, so you can then end it yourself.
What's recorded
Every lock that ends is saved in your history with:
- how long it lasted, and the dates
- how many check-ins and missed check-ins it had
- your keyholder, if you had one
- your note, or your keyholder's message
- why it ended: Self-ended, Released by keyholder, Emergency unlock, No check-ins, Maximum time reached, Released myself (keyholder away) or Ended by a moderator
With a Beta lockbox, your way out opens as soon as the lock ends, however it ends: your code, or your box is told to unlock. It stays on Home for 3 days and in your history (Show my code).
Ending a lock also stops a running lock game, closes any check-in exception you were waiting on, and ends a timed release.
In the feed, a lock ending can show as "ended their lock after 12 days" or "was released by Morgan after 12 days", depending on Settings → Activity in the feed. An emergency unlock looks just like any other ending there.
Start again
You can start a new lock whenever you're ready, from Home. Your Best ever and totals carry over.
