Your diary

Write diary entries about your lock, add photos and videos, choose who can read each one, and answer your keyholder's prompts.

Your diary is a place to write about how your lock is going, in your own words. Each entry can be private, or shared with your keyholder so you can talk about it together.

Open your diary

  • On a phone: tap the diary card on your Home screen. It says Start your diary, Write today's diary entry, or "Morgan asks" when your keyholder has left you a question.
  • On a computer or tablet: choose More → Diary in the menu on the left.

The diary is for locked members. If you switch to keyholder, you can still read your earlier entries but can't write new ones.

Write an entry

  1. Type in the box. An entry can be up to 5,000 characters.
  2. If you like, add photos and videos (see below).
  3. If you like, pick a Mood: Strong, Good, Okay, Restless or Struggling.
  4. If you like, pick your Frustration from 1 to 10. Tap a choice again to clear it.
  5. Choose who can read it (see below).
  6. Tap Save entry.

While you're locked, each entry shows the day of your lock, like "Day 12". Write on several days in a row and you'll see a streak, like 🔥 4 days in a row. Seven days in a row earns the Dear diary achievement.

Add photos and videos

An entry can have up to 6 photos and videos, with or without words.

  1. Tap 📷 Add photos or videos.
  2. Choose From your device, Record a video (with your camera, right here) or, if you keep some there, From My media.
  3. They're added while you write. You can save the entry once they've been sent. A video can take a moment longer to get ready: it shows in the entry when it is.

Videos can be up to 2 minutes. Videos need a verified ID: see Verify your ID. Location and camera details are taken out of every photo and video.

Whoever can read the entry sees its photos and videos: just you, or you and your keyholder when it's shared. Tap one to see it large. To take one out, open the entry, tap Edit, tap ✕ on it, and tap Save. Photos and videos from My media are copied into the entry, so deleting them from My media doesn't change it.

Who can read it

When you have a keyholder, you choose for each entry:

  • 👁 Share with Morgan (selected to start with): your keyholder can read it and reply.
  • 🔒 Just me: nobody else can read it.

Without a keyholder, every entry is private. Nobody else ever sees your diary: not other members, not your family, and not the CageCheck team. Alerts and emails about your diary never include what you wrote.

In your list, each entry has a chip: 👁 Morgan (shared with your keyholder), 🔒 Private, or 🔒 Past keyholder (shared with someone you're no longer paired with, so nobody can read it now).

To change it later, open the entry and tap 🔒 Make private or 👁 Share with Morgan. Your keyholder gets an alert the first time you share an entry with them.

Reading what you share is one of your keyholder's powers: Diary. If you switch it off, they can't read any of your diary until you give it back, and your diary says so. You can still share entries meanwhile: they're there for your keyholder when the power comes back, without an alert.

Answer your keyholder's prompt

Your keyholder can leave you a question for your next entry. You get an alert, and the question waits at the top of your diary.

  1. Write your answer. Keep 👁 Share with Morgan selected and This answers Morgan's question ticked.
  2. Tap Send answer.

Morgan is told you answered. A private entry doesn't answer the question. If Morgan changes the question while you're writing, CageCheck shows you the new one and keeps what you wrote.

Edit, delete and reply

Tap an entry to open it. You can:

  • Tap Edit to change the text, photos and videos, mood or frustration, then tap Save. The entry is marked "Edited".
  • Tap Delete, then Delete entry to confirm. It's gone for good, with its photos, videos and any replies.
  • Talk about it: on an entry shared with your keyholder, you can both reply underneath. Type in the box and tap Send reply. You can delete your own replies.

When you change keyholders

When a pairing ends, that keyholder can't read your diary any more. A new keyholder only sees what you share with them. If you shared entries with someone before, a note at the top of your diary lets you share them all with your new keyholder in one go: tap Share with Morgan.

For what your keyholder sees and how prompts work on their side, see Reading a diary as a keyholder. To pair with a keyholder, see Pairing.
